DMA179: Sketchbook Arist - Stina Persson

For this assignment I was assigned the visual artist Stina Persson. After some lengthy research and just studying what Stina likes to do with her work, I was ready to start painting. I noticed that Stina's signature "thing" was to use water colours to create portraits using contrast and white space. She also likes to blend colours together to really create an aurora-type feel to her work. Another effect I noticed was that she liked to use kind of a wet paint dripping effect on her work so I decided to incorporate that as well. In addition, I included some minor paint splashing techniques that you can find in her work as well.

The final water colour painting that I create is below and the link to Stina's portfolio that I used for inspiration is at http://www.stinapersson.com/portfolio/watercolour/

DMA204: Depth of Field Assignment

For this photography assignment we had to take 3 objects and have each of them in solemn focus. This means that we had to play around with the aperture, shutter speed and of course, focus. These are the four images that I came up with.

The first picture: The foreground is the only thing in focus as you can tell from the close-up of the first tree.

The second picture: The foreground and the background trees are out of focus while the middle ground is in focus.

The third picture: The foreground and middle ground trees are out of focus and the back tree (background) is in focus.

The last picture: All three objects are in focus.

DMA204: TEL Building Tour

The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) building is located at the York University campus.

This building is shared by both York and Seneca@York students.

The TEL Building is physically attached (via bridge) to the Seneca building, making access easier in the winter time.

Upon entering the building, it looks significantly different from the Seneca building.

The TEL building is a very attractive building in terms of the interior. The design of it allows you to see all floors from the main central stair area.

The building is 5 stories tall, 6 including the lower lobby.

Being a Technology building, the tech at the TEL building is very advanced and the TEL offers the latest in computer technology.

The TEL building offers a wide array of work areas for students. Unlike Seneca, the TEL building is open 24/7 to accommodate nocturnal students.

Apart from classrooms (which have an abundance of computers), the TEL building also offers a few computer labs for students to use when they are out of class.

Aside from study and computer areas, the TEL building also offers quite a few lounge areas for students to relax.

The TEL building is a very art-oriented building and you will find a lot of art pieces on display through-out the school.

And of course, the TEL building offers a full cafeteria for students and staff. Unfortunately the cafeteria is not open 24 hours.

DMA179: Soy Sauce Menu

For this assignment we were supposed to take a piece of paper, a cup of soy sauce and a paint brush and create the background of a Japanese restaurant menu. I didn't really have any game plan, I made a really messy "Japanese style" background and then tried to draw a big cherry blossom tree. It didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to... but you can use your imagination.

DMA101 Vector Assignment

The sketch I worked with

The final product

For this assignment we had to take a pencil sketch and turn it into a vector using Illustrator. I chose to do this awesome sketch of a Skyline GTR and hopefully do it justice in Illustrator. Although I do feel like there could have been more I could do, I did pour a good 12-15 hours into this. A lot of the time just testing the shading and testing colours that may or may not have worked, which a lot of them did not. I did try to put as much detail into as possible, but I will continue to work on it, perhaps in Photoshop as well.

DMA204: Sneaker Magazine Ad

Before and After

Being from an advertising program prior to DMA, I was really excited for this assignment. The assignment was to photograph a pair of shoes and turn that photo into a magazine ad. And I think with shoes, you really have to take a visual and lifestyle approach with its advertising. I had quite a few pairs of shoes to choose from but I decided to use this pair of Reebok Freestyles just because of how photogenic it is.

The idea behind the ad was self-expression. Knowing the target audience for the brand and the shoes, it was easy to say that whoever would wear these shoes would want to make a statement. And since these shoes are the New York edition Freestyles, I had to take it to the roots of New York and the 5 boroughs. The challenge was setting these shoes in a New York environment when we live in Toronto. So I took it to the back alleys of Toronto, trying to take advantage of graffiti to mimic that New York street art look. Now the lighting wasn't very great in the alleys so I took it to photoshop to boost some of the colour values and made the background a bit brighter. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out and I had fun carrying these shoes around all day, taking pictures and having people thinking "what the hell is he doing". Good times.
